220lbs of Dynamic Cinematic Carnage AND Audiophile Bliss? | Arendal 1723 Review
**Description:**
Well, hello there. I've been a little sick, and I hope I can get through this without hacking up a lung. Bear with me. Thank you.
Today on New Record Day, I'm excited to dive into the Arendal 1723 Tower Speakers, priced at $3899 for the pair. These are a competent, well-made loudspeaker that offers deep, powerful bass and top-end extension. While they can be a little forward at times, this can be tamed with speaker positioning and tubes.
Arendal may not be exclusively a home theater company, but many folks eyeing these speakers are probably both 2-channel enthusiasts and multichannel dabblers. Think along the lines of SVS and Klipsch. For today's review, I'm focusing on the audiophile music experience with the 1723 Towers.
Let's get into the details:
- **Specifications**: The 1723s are large, standing 45 inches tall, 11 inches wide, and 16 inches deep, weighing 111 pounds each. They feature a two-and-a-half-way design with port plugs, black and white finish options, slanted cabinets, and magnetic grills.
- **Drivers and Build Quality**: A soft dome tweeter, four treated paper cone woofers, and a robust design. They have excellent build quality, despite being made in China.
- **Listening Impressions**: The sound can be a bit forward, but using tubes like the Gallion TS120 in class A mode can balance this. The treble is precise, though slightly lacking in air and ambience. The midrange is clean and detailed, especially in female vocals. The bass is deep and tight, with the option to use port plugs for customization.
- **Soundstage**: Impressive imaging and a massive soundstage, great for both home theater and 2-channel listening.
Join me for an in-depth review, sound clips, and measurements to see if these speakers are the right fit for you. Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and share your thoughts in the comments!

    Because of the size of my room, I purchased the 1723 s tower speakers. I am using them in a stereo configuration. Source is a VPI/SME/Ortofon 2M Black, VTL 2.5, McCormack DNA-0.5 Deluxe Edition and an assortment of Audioquest cables. I've cared about reproduced sound since the 1970s. I am extremely happy with these speakers and I would imagine if they were manufactured in Europe, and covered with a fancy veneer, people would be happily spending 10 to $12,000 a pair for them. I was particularly attracted to this company's in-home audition policy. Giving the consumer plenty of time to decide whether or not these speakers are right for them. They are definitely right for me and I don't anticipate buying new ones anytime soon.

    Interesting. I've been using the K-Array Python (3"x 8 drivers) and Kayman (4" x 8 drivers) for years and absolutely love them. They're spendy, for sure -- I think Carvin finally did the thing and made a version without bells and whistles since we do most of that stuff on a processor or even in the mixing console these days. I just had a conversation with a friend who mixes FOH for stadium headliners and he brought up pretty much what you're covering here. I don't know how K-Array does it -- the columns (typically two cabinets, so 16 drivers tall) sound amazing although I do often find myself adding some +10Khz "air" to the overall mix. I'd love to hear your take on these....

    Could I afford it, I would move where the AC supply is hydro-electric, from high mineral content water. Pure. Sound. Always. On the other hand, vintage coal-fired lends a warm tubelike quality. And a parallel system of audiophile distribution line on wooden towers (Okay, that last line is a bit crazy).

    Fremer gave his blessing to Krupps-Funkensheit mica-cellulose audiophile record sleeves (June, 2018) which “reset the bar for imaging, presence and air”…”blow Mobile Fidelity’s out of the water”, were his exact words. ;)

    I don’t agree with this at all. Now, while my MC is significantly more expensive, it’s significantly better than the LVB 250. It’s actually not even remotely close and is definitely night and day. I had an Ortofon LVB 250, and now have a Rega Apheta 3. There is not a single thing that the Ortofon can compete with. In fact, I would go as far to say the LVB is very overrated.

    I feel like we are seeing a relatively new segment in “audiophile” 2 channel emerging: really good towers that are part of HT system. I see SVS as leading the charge in this direction, but there are others like Arendal as well. And I get it. I have a Sonos HT system. Am I listening to 2 channel on this system? No. Do I wish I had a system where the front 2 channels were good enough for me to want to listen to them without doing more than pressing some buttons on my remote? Yes. Do I expect the last word in sound quality from a system like this? No, but it doesn’t have to be the last word. It just has to be good enough for me to not go running down the audiophile rabbit hole. Kind see this as another variation on the other trend we have seen in 2 channel: the all in one speaker where you just connect the speaker to an Ethernet cable, plug the speakers into the wall and you are done, no mixing and matching of equipment. Some audiophiles live for the mixing and matching, others just want to enjoy the music with a minimum of fuss. Over time, I see both of these trends taking over the “audiophile” sub $10,000 speaker market.

    I don't like forward vocals. Given this has (nearly) a horn tweeter, won't those mids be pushed forward. I have the 2005 Dali Ikon 6 and have not enjoyed having to turn the volume down on many female vocals. I like the look of these, but am currently scrutinizing all the reviews on UA-cam.

    @mikehanks1399 3 дні тому

    You are one of the better, if not the best, audio guy on UA-cam. As an audio enthusiast (not an audiophile, God forbid), I kind of stumbled into nearfield listening by necessity. Hear me out on this. The smallest room any of us have is our ears, but headphones fill that room up very nicely. One thing they can't do is allow us to feel the music with our bodies they way speakers can. I have some quality bookshelves and even a sub (very unconventionally placed, by the way) in a rather small room, 19 feet long by 12 feet wide, and I have to use the narrow part for my listening area. I'm getting great sound, so it can be done. But I did think on the smaller side when it came to my speakers and that's made all the difference. In effect, I have a big set of headphones. Only now, I get the visceral feel of the sound waves hitting my body as well as my ears. Keep up the good work, you are really good at what you do.

    Congratulations on your "Listening Room". Before I were to spend a crazy amount of money on some crazy speakers creating a place for your system that has ideal acoustics, or certainly better than a standard home is a really good idea. It makes so much sense. But I keep looking, and I don't see the most crucial feature in your Listening Room. A disco Ball. lol

  • @johannjohann6523
    @johannjohann6523 3 дні тому

    I've still not figured out from any description what is a 2.5 or 2 1/2 speaker. What I do know is that I can't accept less than a 3 way speaker for my main speakers. Yes there are some good two way speakers and I own some they are my rear speaker.l. I listen more to music through my flatscreen via my computer than use my flatscreen to watch movies, and center channel speakers are not musical generally and rarely use a center channel speaker. Are we sure the whole 2.5 speaker is just cheating by the speaker manufacturers? lol wouldn't be the first time.

    • @alexw890
      @alexw890 3 дні тому

      No, it’s not cheating at all. It offers many benefits over a dual woofer 2 way. This one was just implemented poorly.

    • @fgjui2
      @fgjui2 3 дні тому

      The 2.5 way configuration of the arendal means that the bottom 2 woofers are playing from 0 to 120hz, and the top 2 woofers are playing from 0 to the xoverpoint to tweeter, which is 1500 or 2500hz.( can't remember exactly). All woofers are woofing but only 2 of them are midrange also. Hope this helps

  • @geickmei
    @geickmei 3 дні тому

    Ron, you should be doing this audibly, not with the lasers. Sit in front of the right speaker. Play a recording with a center soloist. Gradually toe both speakers in until the center image recenters. It's called time/ intensity trading and is the basis behind the DBX Soundfield One speaker from Mark Davis.

    I run two Starkrimson Ultra monoblocks with an Atma-Sphere MP-3 preamp driving Spatial Sapphire speakers. The sound is extremely detailed, dynamic, and very satisfying. I forget how good it sounds until I hear other systems. That said, when I was evaluating the Ultra, I found the high frequencies to be overly dry and have a slight ringing driving the Spatials at 8ohms (common class D criticisms). Using Paul Speltz’s Autoformers (the AntiCables guy), I lowered the impedance to 4ohms and got rid of the problem. Leo confirmed that doing so attenuates the high end. I can't imagine a better sound for the money. My opinion of class D is that it certainly rivals other topologies. After a certain point, "better" is highly subjective. It comes down to tradeoffs between one technology and another and one's preference of tradeoff. Coming from the class A OTL world, it took me a while to grow accustom to the Ultras, but now it is my preference, the level of detail being the overriding factor.

    The Source Point 888 is a thing of beauty. I can't afford 'em, but sure wish I could.

    I hear a lot of your room reverberations! That's the main difference with the original recordings.

    Thanks for a balanced review of a hyped product! Other reviewers have pointed out the rise in the treble, but few have talked about the dip in the midrange, which to me is just as problematic. And this was also clearly showcased in the sound clips. Hope you feel better soon!
